Rehabilitating

My body stabilized for the second trimester earlier this month. It's been nice to not have problems eating food, being nauseous, void of energy, etc. I still hear multiple times a week from Katie, "I'm so happy you're not sick! It's not fun when you're sick." We spent the first good week going places out of the house for fun. We couldn't do much before when I'd suddenly need to rush home to rest or be nauseous. So we spent days at the library, visiting friends, and going to stores to play in the toy aisle. After that week of fun, we had to get down to business--having me relearn how to be a functioning human being and clean up my house and start cooking. That took effort. I'm still trying to regain my footing with being organized for my meal plans. Part of the problem encountered there was that, at the time, we were planning to move to Colorado, so I didn't want to re-establish my habit of shopping for a month at time. But then Natoma made Shad an offer to stay, so now I'm back to trying to get myself in the once a month shopping. Right now I'm going two weeks at a time. I'll get myself figured out eventually.

It also took a while to reset my mind from packing and moving to staying. Still telling Tom occasionally that we're not looking for a new house in Colorado anymore, and he doesn't need to help his "father" find a new job, either. Now we're just readjusting to a normal life of staying here, planting a garden, and trying to catch up on months of neglected work.

Oh, and then there's work. Right after we changed our minds and agreed to stay, Natoma had a sudden urgent period of mandatory overtime to get orders completed. So Shad had two weeks in a row of near 60 hours. That almost killed me. I really, truly couldn't stand the kids anymore. Last week was a nice, normal 40 hour week that ended on Thursday and we got to go to Geneva, NE on Friday. We spent the night with Shad's parents, before going to Omaha for a youth temple trip on Saturday to do baptisms for the dead.

I should have mentioned before this that when Shad had all his overtime, I suddenly got bit with the family history bug and had to do it. It consumed me for about a week and we had to eat out or have sandwiches a lot because I'd lose myself and then suddenly realize it was 5 pm and I had no dinner plans. But I probably found about 30 names, 15 of which we were able to take to the temple. After the temple, Shad and I went to the Glendale Cemetery, just 3 miles east of Louisville, NE, just south of Omaha. That is where a large portion of the Hennings family (German ancestors down my paternal grandfather's side) are buried. So we went to do a bit of family history tourism and take pictures of headstones. The wind was fierce, but we came out with some 50 photos. I also noticed names on the headstones that are now starting to show up in census records as having married some of my relatives, so I've got a lot more work to go still to piece everyone together and find out who I'm related to. Then we'll probably visit the cemetery again on another Omaha trip.

I've decided to start socializing my Tom and Katie with animals. Tom's never been a big fan, which I attribute to my parents' dog Amie jealously barking anytime my dad held Tom as a baby. Tom has come a long way in his relationship with animals, but I still want him to feel comfortable with them and even enjoy them, rather than avoid them. What really inspired all of this was one afternoon sitting out on the porch swing with Dancy, a huge flock of turkey vultures glided overhead. They came just a couple at a time, but we saw about 40 of them. She screamed and flapped her arms with delight. Absolutely loved them! We've got a couple different friends in town who have farm animals, so I made arrangements to go visit the animals. We went to Martha's one day and saw her kittens, rabbit, turkeys, chicks, chickens, turtle, and the trees in her backyard where the vultures roost. Dancy happily touched all the animals, but Tom and Katie politely declined. A couple days later we went to Jennifer's house to see her dog, cat, rabbits, chickens and gerbils. She also has a horse, but the horse wasn't around for socializing. I told Tom and Katie I'd give them each a piece of candy for each animal they touched. Suddenly they were willing to pet everyone. We ended up going out to Pizza Hut for the lunch buffet instead. We needed lunch and were out of almost everything at home, so it worked out.

Easter happened. The Wednesday before Easter, I had put the kids to bed and was cleaning up the kitchen when the doorbell rang at 9 pm. Somebody left 3 Easter baskets on the doorstep. Since the kids were just freshly put in bed and not asleep yet, I let them have the fun of seeing the surprise baskets. The Saturday before Easter there was an Easter egg hunt at the courthouse at 2. In the afternoon. Possibly the most inconvenient time anyone could choose. After a bit of a frustrating morning (this was one of the Saturdays Shad was working), I put the kids down for naps at one and still decided to get them up at 1:45 for the hunt. Stupid. We got there right ON TIME instead of a few minutes early, and their age group was already going. Which pretty much means that it was done. They section off the grass around the courthouse into 4 quadrants and label them for age groups. The eggs are really just thrown out on the lawn (even for the older kids) and so it's a free for all once they let the kids across the line. They went one quadrant at a time, and the whole thing was done in 15 minutes. And then everyone just left. Nobody even stuck around for socializing. Just grab the candy and run home. Definitely not something I want to instill in my kids, and nothing we'll participate in in the future. We did see some friends we used to play with at the library who moved to Wichita, and they stayed to visit. But we came home and I put Katie and Dancy back down for naps, and let Tom have quite time upstairs until Shad came home. We had the missionaries over for dinner Sunday, died eggs Monday morning, and then had egg hunts Monday night for Family Home Evening.

My cousin Michael got married on April 25. He and his wife Clara stopped at our house late that Monday night as a hotel stop on their way from Cincinnati to Provo, UT. I couldn't stay up any longer, so I didn't see them that night, but got to visit with them in the morning. Katie and Tommy were coloring with crayons when Clara came down and they thought it was so cool that she sat right down at their table and colored with them. We enjoyed breakfast together, then Michael played "Let It Go" on the piano with Clara singing. Tom and Katie thought it was pretty cool, even though they declined singing along. I had Michael drive me to Natoma to pick up my van, while Clara played with the kids. They built a cake with the bricks. Shad's been driving to work this week instead of biking because of the 30 mile winds.

Dancy has had an explosion of development in the past month. She started sitting herself up, pulling up on furniture, climbing up one step onto our stair landing (and down), climbing up the stairs (full flights!), walking when we hold her hands, talking more, signing "more" and understanding "all done" and "bed," waving and saying "hi." She's starting to refuse bottles. Guess she's just getting to grown up for that:) She's trying to crawl on her knees; Tom and Katie get really excited when they see her, and exclaim, "Mom! Mom, she's doing it! Oh. She's on her belly again." Dancy just loves her dada and lights up any time we mention his name. She smiles, flaps her arms and says his name, "Dada! Dada! Dada! Dada!" She is an extremely social girl who loves to go out to see people and play with kids her age and size, but she also still likes to flirt and play shy by smiling and hiding in my chest when people talk to her.

Katie is fully potty trained, a fact that Tommy takes great pride in because he was instrumental in helping train her, though she's been reverting a little bit last week. She had an accident every day last week, and it's been frustrating. Tommy is a big boy and goes overnight now! So proud of him.

I am 20 weeks pregnant and enjoy feeling baby movement.

And now for 2.5 months of pictures. Don't worry, there aren't that many. I was sick half that time, remember?

Katie is the only one in her class for nursery (ages 18 months to 3 years) at church. So she has formed a special bond with her teacher, Jocelyn. Often, as soon as Katie sees Jocelyn, she grabs her bag and runs to sit with Jocelyn. Katie tells me all the time that, "Jocelyn is my best friend!" or "Jocelyn is my girl friend!" They play beauty parlor, since it's just the two of them.

Katie is always delighted to show off her hairdos and give a twirl.

This is from a Sunday in March when they first started it. I've since stopped fixing Katie's hair before we go to church, and her church bag also now contains a comb with hair ties and clips.

She's also wearing a new dress, which she loves.

Tom still practices his photography skills, whenever I allow him to use my camera. The following pictures of toys are from him.

How could I have forgotten this? This was a grumpy day for me. I was cranky and snapping at the kids for every little thing, so I took a time out in the basement to cool off. When I came upstairs, I saw the beginnings of this yarn escapade. They found a full skeen of golden rod yarn that Shad had left out from a project. I saw them run a couple laps across the living room with it and thought to myself, "I can either get upset and yell at them, or I can ignore it and choose to be happy. I'll just let this one go." And so they ran 5-6 laps around the dining room and living room.

Tom proudly showing off his yarn.

Katie showing off yarn too. She dresses herself.

Easiest way to undo this mess was to cut in one place. I then spent the evening untangling and winding yarn balls. It was surprisingly calming and therapeutic.

Dancy is so proud of herself getting on the stairs!

One night having graham crackers for snack, Tom exclaimed, "Mom! What look at my graham cracker! What state is it?" I looked over and could very clearly see the state of Idaho.

I had him place it on his map (he knows 90% of the states west of the Mississippi, and about a third east of the Mississippi).

Katie copied at made Idaho too, but ate it right as I took her picture.

Tom thinks he's so funny to eat Idaho.

Visit with Michael and Clara. Katie didn't want to be in the picture, but she is happy to see it now. "There's Michael! And there's Clara!" Tom was our photographer.

This was hilarious, but she moved before I got the camera. When I came in to get Dancy from naptime, I couldn't find Katie. But the kids' laundry basket was on her bed, stuffed with her blankets. Upon closer inspection, I saw a foot in there, too. But then she climbed out when I came back with the camera, and was sad when I asked her to climb back in. She thought I was telling her to continue napping.

We had a weekend in Colorado (which I'll write about later) and got a cute cousins picture with Ryan.

I bought a new sippy cup (kids just beat those up) so Dancy is very happy to be big now and proud of herself for figuring it out.

We've also been enjoying lunch picnics on the porch in the warm weather.

Tom and Katie eat in their house.

We had some play time with Elder Hammond and Elder Thompson on Monday after finally having coordinating schedules to have dinner together. Elder Hammond pushed Katie in the tree swing, while Elder Thompson through a ball on the roof and helped Tommy coordinate getting hit by the ball as it fell off. It was a fun game!

And in case you missed it, we're pretty excited for a third girl. Guess we'll have to keep up our rate of baby production so that Tommy gets a brother soon...

And two videos:

Green Eggs and Ham

How Fish Become Food

A Family of Superheroes

For a long time now, Tommy has been introducing himself as Spiderman, and Katie introduces herself as Batman. They tell that to anyone they see in stores or at the park. Likewise, they also tell people that Dancy is Flash, Momma is Firestar, and Dadda is Iceman.

Today we had our 20 week ultrasound. Tommy and I have been referring to our baby as a boy, and occasionally Katie chimes in that she wants our baby to be a "giiiirlllll!" To which Tommy always responds, "Katie, you can have DANCY and I can have our BOY BABY." Love that guy's logic:) However, today on the big screen, she was definitely a girl and not a boy. Tommy cried! Katie was quite triumphant in rubbing it in his face, "We have a girl baby! Not a boy for you, Tom!" So he's going through a bit of mental rehab now, coming to terms with his third sister.

I told him that her name will be Thora Nicole. He asked me what Thora means. I told him it means Thor and that our baby Thora can be Thor to join our superhero team. He quite liked that idea and reminded me that "Thor means thunder!" I think he's starting to be more accepting now that he knows she'll be Thor to be a superhero with all the rest of us.

Also, picking up a bag of pink marshmallows to celebrate on the way home seemed to help, too.

Quite an intense flavor.

Paul and Mallory have called dibs on getting a hammer for her.

Homemade Chunky Tomato Soup

Oh, how I hate food this pregnancy! I really wanted to eat soup for lunch today, but the MSG in canned soups and Ramen gives me a killer headache. I contemplated more Hot and Sour Soup from the local Chinese restaurant, but didn't want to throw more money at that. What I REALLY wanted to eat was a tomato based vegetable soup, but I didn't want to wait for fresh veggies and go through all that work, nor did I want frozen veggies. It's times like these that genius happens...when my brain hasn't been affected by the pregnancy, that is:)

Homemade Chunky Tomato Soup!

Ingredients:
1/3 c pasta (I used small shells)
6 cups water
1 can tomato sauce
1 can diced tomatoes
1/2 tsp basil
1/2 tsp parsley
2-3 cups whatever milk you drink (powdered milk would be a great way to make this 100% food storage!)

Directions:
1. Boil pasta according to package directions in the 6 cups of water. DO NOT drain! 2. Add tomato sauce, tomatoes, basil and parsley. Heat through. 3. Add milk to desired creaminess and consistency.

Oh, this made my day! And I know it's good when Miss Dance yells at me for not refilling the bowl fast enough, yells at me for not feeding her fast enough, and freaks out when she sees me taking a bite that she thinks should have been her. We loved it! She was flapping her arms with excitement and enthusiastically signing her first word: MORE.

Tickles and Pot

Dancy is becoming more interactive with floor games. She was so excited and delighted to help Dadda tickle Tommy!

Taking a break to give me the tongue.

Get back down!

This kind of pot! What were you thinking? So we have hard water out here, and this is exactly why I don't ever want to use my humidifier--all the minerals caked up in the wake of evaporating water. This was my favorite pot. And I used it all winter for humidifying. The humidifier instructions said to use vinegar to rid any residue left behind, so I did just that with this pot.

One gallon of vinegar later, all I had to do was lightly brush the minerals off. So easy, and now I have my pot back!

Two Months of...

Awfulness, joy, excitement, near death, misery. That probably sums it up well.

We came home from our cruise and had the exciting reunion with our kids. Katie asked to go back to Nana's house daily for two weeks. Dancy learned to army crawl and say Dada in the same week. Tom helped me potty train Katie. I got called as Primary second counselor at church. Shad taught Tommy and Katie to say, "I'll sing a song for a penny!" And Tom now extorts me for two pennies, or a quarter. I make him sing tough songs for that quarter. Twinkle Twinkle just doesn't cut it.

We found out I'm pregnant! On Tuesday I will be 3 months pregnant, and no, this isn't a cruise baby. Do the math; this is a holiday baby. I've had 7 weeks of miserable sickness. I hate food. I'm nauseous all the time. I have to eat every hour and a half, yet I can't even think about food without being nauseous. Opening the fridge has been like playing Russian roulette--never know when I'm gonna have to dive for the sink because SEEING food made me throw up. We don't talk about fish. I ate too much on the cruise and combined that with being seasick. So that means I missed out on the awesome seafood sale for Lent. Gosh, just talking about it now--gotta change the subject. Some days I'm okay! But then I move around too much and get motion sick. Or I try to brush my teeth and trigger a gag reflex that can't be controlled. Or I cough, sneeze, or blow my nose and trigger said gag reflex. I hate those days the most because I feel cheated.

Tom and Katie have been sweet helpers through everything. Poor kids though just get so pent up being inside taking care of their sick momma all the time, and it's not for my lack of trying! Every sick day--the really bad ones where I struggle to get off the couch to feed them or wipe their butts--I have tried everyone I know in town to take the kids. And we've pretty much been on our own.

Happier topics: My parents visited over Presidents' weekend. I was supposed to take loads of pictures for Lori and to update our Grandma and Grandpa picture collection, but I didn't. Just a few.

Of Dancy and Grandma.

And Tom and Katie slurping jello through straws.

I tried to get a video of them both sucking their jello to share what that sounded like, but it was a fail. Instead, here's "I'm a Bologna."

And then normal life resumed. Katie discovered she could make a house with her body.

Tom had to practice a bit,

But he eventually got it. Now they flip over their heads all across the room and back.

Tom was playing with his rhino toy and started making him blast farts.

It's nice when someone else (Tom) is the photographer sometimes, because then I get to show up in pictures.

The beginning of sleepovers. Shad had an exclusive sleepover movie night with his kids. I'll admit, I felt a little left out, because I had nothing to do otherwise. But it was important for them to have good Dadda time. Pretty sure Tom was still awake at midnight.

Lori needed me to get this onesie. Ruth may have collaborated.

She's my cheeky babe!

Dancy is really good at spitting her tongue.

And making this face.

She's also a really good swimmer! As shown in this video: http://youtu.be/8rz3LCC1m54

Then Katie and Tom climbed on top of her. This may or may not have been a Hercules play moment where Tom is assigned the character of Hercules, Katie is Meg (or Phil), and Dancy is Pegasus. Or it may have been How to Train Your Dragon, though they usually play that on the coffee table.

Does it ever get old appreciating the peaceful looks of sleep?

Developments

Tom--
Tom is a talker. There's a line from The Incredibles that he quotes all the time--"You sly dog! You got me monologuing!" And we sincerely believe that if Tom were a super villain, monologuing would be his downfall. Not only is he a bit of a blatherskite (I've been on dictionary.com today:), but he scripts our lives for us. "Mom, can you tell me, 'Good job! That is correct!'?" "Katie, say, 'I don't know, sweetheart.'" "Dancy, can you say, 'Thank you, Tommy!'?" (Dancy is not talking in words yet.) Yesterday on the phone, he told Grandma that when she comes to visit, they'll play and he will get married. He will get married when he's big like when he's 6. He also likes to explain everything under the sun to Katie. Here's a dialogue from breakfast a few days ago:
Tom: "And that's what she said, my dear!"
Me: "Okay, my dear!"
Tom: "I'm not your dear."
Me: "Yes you are."
Katie: "You're a REINdeer!"
Tom: "Katie! She is NOT a reindeer. She's a mother! Only Santa Claus has reindeer to FLY through the sky. You understand?!"

He's also started climbing on the backs and arms of couches so he can jump around and slide down the backside. This needs to stop, because he's had several close calls with serious injury.

Katie--
She's potty training! And she's absolutely amazing. We started 10 days ago, and have only done training half of those days because I've had morning all-day sickness. Already, she's got the peeing under control and I don't have to monitor her on it, and she pooped voluntarily this morning! In the middle of playing and while I was resting on the couch trying not to throw up, she ran to the bathroom and came back to report that she peed. Tom and I ran to the bathroom to celebrate with her, only to find that it was a HUGE poop, and not pee! (Okay, so the girl needs to straighten out her pee from her poo.) But that is a HUGE accomplishment! Way to go, Miss Independent! She also calls and texts her favorite people all the time. She calls Uncle Levi, Grandma and Nana much more often than I actually let her. She has fake conversations with them, which are quite fluent. Last week she pretended to call Grandma on her camera and said, "Hi Gamma. Um, I  just miss you a lot. Where's Gampa? He's at work, sweetie."

Dancy--
She's sitting up professionally now. She's following suit of Tom and Katie and refusing to eat baby food. She got a taste of Mom's cooking and has refused to eat the jar stuff ever since. She enjoys eating anything we're eating--yogurt, tortellini, Cheese Soup, 7 layer dip, etc. She loves feeding herself bananas, carrots, crackers and cereal in her high chair. She's not crawling or scooting yet. Not even an army crawl. We think she's more of a swimmer. When she gets excited and wants something or someone, she flexes her abs so that her body lifts higher, then waves and kicks with frantic excitement. Otherwise, she's quite content to just rotate and roll around. She also loves to talk. And she's quite loud about it. A couple weeks ago I had to sit in the foyer of church during sacrament meeting because Dancy wanted to talk. She likes to laugh. Sometimes she'll be playing on the floor and we'll make eye contact and smile at each other. Then we just laugh with each other and she thinks it's so fun! She loves to play with Tom and Katie, and they always ask if she can get down on the floor to play with them. Tom will run around and throw himself into walls or down on the floor and get Dancy laughing up a storm. Katie will sit and read books to her, and share babies.

Me--
Did I say morning sickness? Yes, I'm pregnant:) My development is the size of a blueberry. Along with a delightful aversion to FOOD. Gosh, it is so hard to find anything that sounds appetizing. Not just appetizing, but something that I can think about eating without it making me wretch. Absolutely can't eat fish. I'm not near as sick as I was with Tommy, but a bit more than I was with Katie and Dancy. Baby Blueberry is due on my birthday, September 25. Tom says he also has a baby in his belly, and that his baby's name is Ryan. His baby Ryan doesn't make him sick, but sometimes my baby makes me sick.

December Delights

We felt like we were in such a scramble the whole month that we hardly did many fun Christmasy things, or at least it felt that way. We did get to experience a lot of new things, though--games, friends, food and movies. Okay, if any of this writing sounds weird and disconnected, it's because my head really isn't in this right now, but I'm pushing myself to write anyway.

Okay, games: Shad's coworker Andy asked Shad to learn his game Ventura for him. Andy said he learned better being taught, rather than reading. It actually turned out to be a lot more work than anyone would have anticipated. Ventura is an Italian game (translated into English) and apparently their organization for the explanation of rules is really disorganized and discombobulated. I can't remember exactly, but I think it took Shad upwards of 3 hours to read through the first time. After playing it once, Shad reread the rules to make sure he got everything. Short description of Ventura for those who are interested: You are an Italian family in the 14th Century warring against other families for land, wealth, and fame. Real historical military leaders are on the military cards. We rate this game 4 out of 5 stars--losing one for the rule book. Also! Bonus feature of the game--everyone else hated the ridiculous rule book too, so the $80 game is $20 on the internet as game stores are trying to get it off their shelves. Shad and Andy now play Ventura at work with another coworker during their breaks. Since they can't just have the game out on a table, Andy has them playing it out of 2 drawers in his tool cabinet. Yes, we are that into our games!

Friends: We got better acquainted with Andy and his wife Denise. They live in Beaver City, Nebraska, which is about 30 minutes north of us. We had them over for pizza and Ventura. Denise brought a fantastic dessert--cookie dough baked in brownie batter. I really need to try making that myself! So good! After dinner, I ran out to the theater for 45 minutes to train Andrew (Shad's manager) and his wife Kynzie in working concessions at the theater. Jeremy (theater manager) had called asking for help, but since we had plans we couldn't. We found Andrew and Kynzie to help Jeremy instead, and I went to train them. Super competent concessions workers! We also got to enjoy Andy and Denise's company more after the Natoma Christmas party. Several of Shad's coworkers asked if it was time for games at our house when the party ended, so we had a spontaneous game night. We played Smallworld with 8 players (it's a 5 player game, so we used the 5 player and 3 player boards together) and played in teams of two.

Food: Denise's cookie brownies were delightful and talking about them is making me crave them now. We also had a Brazilian meal for our International Christmas dinner. Mouthwatering Brazilian pork ribs with Brazilian rice, and steamed broccoli. I cooked the ribs in the crockpot instead of oven, and used the broth in Beef Stew the next day. Oh, we couldn't get over how deliciously juice it was! We're excited to have it again soon.

Movies: We introduced Tom and Katie to the Home Alone movies. Just the first two. Anything after that doesn't count. It was such a treat to watch with them. When it got to the booby trap scene at the end of the first movie, Tom and Katie were dying laughing!

I was going to write about Christmas in a different post, but since I started with the food here, I'll continue here. Christmas Eve I baked the last kind of cookie I wanted to bake, then we made up our goodie bags and went out to deliver them. We sang carols to our friends and neighbors as we delivered them cookies. We also drove around looking at lights in the process. We exchanged gifts at Paul and Mallory's house while we were there. We gave them Epic, they gave us Monsters, Inc., a cowgirl Jessie costume for Katie, and Dominion (a card game). Tom was so excited over Monsters, Inc! We were already planning on having hot chocolate with popcorn and a movie when we got home, so we watched Monsters, Inc. Okay, maybe they all watched Monsters, Inc while I finished wrapping presents and stuffing stockings. And Tom watched the movie almost daily for the next 3 weeks.

Christmas morning, Elder Willden and Elder Hammond came over to spend the day with us at 8:30. We opened presents together, then cooked breakfast while Tom and Katie were downstairs watching Epic, which Katie got for Christmas. We pretty much didn't see the kids all day. They watched their two movies and played in the basement, except for when they came up to ask for food. We played games with Willden and Hammond. They helped assemble the breakfast burritos that I had made the filling for earlier that week.

My favorite husband got me a grain grinder for Christmas, which, truth be told, is the one thing I wanted, but didn't want to ask for because I thought it was too much. He's the best! He also got me a Civil War battle map and a Pirates of the Caribbean Davy Jones' chest CD player--something I wanted 9 years ago when it came out in Target. Now it's in my sewing/craft room, if I ever have time to go there and enjoy it.

Our house has two heaters/coolers--one in the attic that circulates the upstairs, and one in the basement that circulates the basement and main floor. The upstairs one (that has had problems with the a/c for a couple years) broke at the end of the month. So we bought one space heater and borrowed another and will just wait to replace the unit with tax returns.

Tom and Katie helped get out all our Christmas decorations.

Dancy had fun with all the new stuff to play with.

Tom and Katie did a good job decorating the tree.

Despite her face, Dancy is Shad's number one fan! And in case you're wondering, those two circles on Shad's forehead--those are from those plastic poppers that you invert and then they pop up in the air. You know what I'm talking about? He and Tom were putting them on their heads.

Tom found a new way to climb on the couch.

Over the back!

The sum of all December--Christmas, chaos, happy kids.
